Airlie Day Spa - Joined Do the Whitsundays

02-Jun-2011

Australian tourism records another first as 50 Whitsunday tourism operators join forces in an independently organised social media promotional campaign.

“Do the Whitsundays”, a free online competition launched today (June 1), offers two winners a 25-night Whitsunday holiday for two people each, with 74 features, in keeping with the “74 Island Wonders” regional theme, worth more than $50,000

Campaign organiser Philip Batty said getting 50 tourist operators together for a competition run solely through social media to promote an area like the Whitsundays has never happened before.

“Entering the competition is easy – simply visit the “Do the Whitsundays” Facebook page, follow the prompts and you’re in. Entrants will have 74 days, from June 1, to accumulate as many entries as possible by sharing the page with friends.”

Mr Batty said it was this viral component that had the capacity to make “Do the Whitsundays” a great success.

“Basically the more times your name is in the hat the more chance it has of being pulled out. The potential for big numbers on this is great. The idea is to spread it around the world as quickly as possible,” Mr Batty said.

The prize includes flights from anywhere in the world, accommodation and more activities than any holiday makers have experienced in the Whitsundays before.

Mr Batty said the competition would also be posted on the Facebook walls of Tourism Whitsundays, Tourism Queensland and Tourism Australia, reaching a potential 1.9 million entrants through these avenues alone.

Tourism Australia Managing Director Andrew McEvoy said:

“As we all know, Queensland has been doing it tough this year, following the floods and Cyclone Yasi.

"Obviously, both Tourism Australia and Tourism Queensland are already heavily involved in the Queensland recovery efforts but it's great to see the industry helping itself - further proof, if it were needed, that nothing beats Queensland.

“The Whitsundays is one of the most beautiful places on earth, as the lucky 'Do the Whitsundays' prize winner is going to soon discover. I only wish I could enter and win!"
