Heroes recognised with make-overs

TWO local women are being rewarded for their community work with a special package from Airlie Day Spa.

TWO local women are being rewarded for their community work with a special package from Airlie Day Spa.

Kerry Read-Zorzi is a local foster mum and Maz McDougall is a tireless community worker.

Airlie Day Spa has introduced a community hero program and will spoil a local hero every two months with a one hour massage, mini mani, spa pedicure, cut, colour, blowdry and finish with a light make-up valued at more than $350.

The program was only launched last week and the response was so overwhelming that the business decided to name the first two community heroes.

Kerry Read-Zorzi of Proserpine has fostered more than 100 children in their time of need and has also given herself endlessly and tirelessly for her son through many, many hospital visits from Townsville to Brisbane.

Kerry was nominated by her sister Jodie Read.

"Kerry’s life has been so full-on that I used to get tired just watching her," Jodie said.

The other local hero, Maz McDougall has been involved with many charity events and has helped out a lot of people in their time of need.

She was nominated on facebook by Amy Fowler who described her as amazing and said she was always helping out with fundraising and event organising. Within hours, many others had agreed with the facebook nomination and had written their own comments.

One of those was Maria Cavanagh.

"She has been behind the scenes of many things that people don’t even realise. What she does to help others is straight from her great big heart," Maria said. Airlie Day Spa Julie Menner said the first round of the competition had closed and winners were announced early as the business had so many nominations for local heroes.

She said the rules were simple.

"The winner must come from the Whitsunday region, including Bowen, Proserpine, Airlie and all the great bits in between.

"Think of people who help you in everyday life including nurses, teachers, emergency services personnel, charity workers and coaches."
